👑 Meet Kerry: The ‘Town Queen’ Keeping Grimsby’s Town Centre Safe, Connected & Cared For

This month’s Town Centre Champion is someone many of you will already know by name — and smile — as she walks the beat through Grimsby town centre: PCSO Kerry-Anne Leaning, affectionately nicknamed “the Town Queen” by local young people.

Kerry has been a constant presence in the town centre for over 12 years (with just one short break), and her dedication to building genuine relationships across the whole community is what truly sets her apart.

From business owners and retail staff to residents, rough sleepers and regular town centre visitors — Kerry knows the people behind the shopfronts and the stories behind the smiles.

“I used to say it felt like walking into the unknown every day — now it’s like walking onto Coronation Street,” Kerry laughs. “You recognise the faces, you know the names. It’s become a happy mix of familiarity.”

At the heart of Kerry’s role is a deep commitment to mental health awareness and compassionate engagement. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, helping someone in crisis, or simply stopping to say “How are you, really?” — her daily mission is to make people feel seen, supported, and safe.

Kerry also works with NAViGO, and is proud of her extensive knowledge of local services and support networks. Her “signposting toolbox” means she can connect people in need with everything from warm spaces and mental health support to basic care like a cup of tea and a quiet conversation.

She’s also been instrumental in tackling violence against women and girls through education, partnership working, and victim support packs funded by Humberside Police and North East Lincolnshire Council.

Her collaboration with local businesses — including Willow Tree Boutique — has helped raise awareness and amplify the voices of local women, ensuring town centre safety is everyone’s business.

And then, of course, there’s the crown. 👑

After months of working with a large group of young people who had previously been involved in antisocial behaviour, Kerry turned things around — not through punishment, but through patience, presence, and persistence.

One day they surprised her with a crown from the pound shop and dubbed her The Town Queen.” She wore it with pride as they toured the town together — a moment that summed up everything she stands for.

“It’s about giving people time,” she says. *“Sometimes that’s all someone needs — just to be noticed.”
